In The Mansion Of A Million Years

In The Mansion Of A Million Years

I'm currently writing a story set just before the demise of the New Kingdom in Ancient Egypt. This is my first foray back into creative writing in a long time and I wanted to get the historical aspects right - which meant I had some reading up to do on the period. At this point, I have the plot outlined to my satisfaction and I've drafted about half the scenes. July 1st is my target for completion.

synopsis...
Pharaoh Ramesses achieved great victories in battle. He successfully defended the fertile valley of the Nile, three times, against hungry invaders who came by land and sea. He enriched the priests of Amun and Ptah with the spoils and put the defeated to work in fields, mines, quarries, and tombs. In the 12th year of his reign, all was halcyon in Egypt... until his only son was murdered.

Qeb, a young warrior in Pharaoh's charioteer corps, returns home for victory ceremonies in Thebes. His enlistment was brief and hardly fraught with peril - a lop-sided confrontation with the Libyan tribes gives him little sense of achievement in which to exalt. He longs for greater trials, so when his heart is weighed against the feather of truth he might reach paradise. He decides to follow the footsteps of his commander into the service of the Medjai, the elite force of law and order in Thebes. But he quickly discovers the occupation is not what he expected and he grows restless for a chance at adventure beyond the Great Green Sea. All that changes when - against better judgment - he falls in love with a chantress in the royal harem. They defile a sacred place with their passion, an offense punishable by death. They could flee into the desert...but when Qeb learns of a terrible secret, he must find the courage to do the right thing. If he doesn't, Egypt will be thrown into total chaos.
